Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy affecting whitetails and mule deer, elk, moose, carivou and reindeer. TSEs are thought to be caused by misfolded proteins called prions and include similar diseases such as mad cow disease in cattle, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans and scrapie in sheep.

Crossing fences kills tens of thousands of animals every year as they migrate or during their daily movments to access habitat on the opposite side, or as they flee from danger. Wildlife-friendly fences seek to protect big game, birds and other wildlife while also serving their intended purpose to mark property boundaries, control or protect livestock.
