I started Veterans day by driving up to the Bison Range with my two sons. As soon as we arrived, we began to see whitetails bucks on the move. It only got better from there. Perhaps it was the combination of the just-full moon, incoming cold front or simply just the date, but the rut (mating season for wild ungulates) was off and running. After lunch we returned to Missoula, then I went out in the golden light to photograph a group mule deer. I was able to catch up with a buck that I photographed last year, now seeming to the leading man. I really love getting to know individual animals and watching them as they mature!
